The Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club and Canadian Football League (CFL) enthusiasts collectively mourn the loss of George Reed, whose passing was publicly announced on Sunday, October 1, 2023. George Reed’s impact in the realm of sports is illuminated by his on-field achievements and off-field experiences, transforming him into a legendary figure.

A mere day before reaching his 84th birthday, Reed concluded his life’s journey, leaving indelible memories within the Regina community, a place he called home since his recruitment by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. This tenure spanned 13 years, during which he not only covered 116 yards and scored 134 touchdowns but also emerged as an undisputed leader.

Reed’s athletic accomplishments extended to nine appearances in the CFL All-Star, underscoring his exceptional performance over an extended period. Additionally, his triumph as a Grey Cup champion in 1966 solidified his status.

His trajectory led him to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, ultimately culminating in his recognition as the league’s foremost player in 1965, thanks to his remarkable 1,768 yards. Of particular note is his enduring record of 134 rushing touchdowns, a feat considering the caliber of CFL members who possess the potential to achieve such milestones.

Beyond the on-field exploits, what distinguishes George Reed is his profound contributions to the community, epitomizing kindness, humility, and devotion. Randy Ambroise, CFL Commissioner, recounts Reed’s early challenges in Regina, where he, a Mississippi native, faced difficulties securing housing due to the community’s unfamiliarity with African-American neighbors.

Over the years, George Reed endeared himself to the community through his dedicated work with the George Reed Foundation, established in 1975. For half a century, he volunteered in areas such as education, lifelong learning, healthy living, and supporting individuals with disabilities. The CFL icon’s legacy lives on through the plans of the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation and the George Reed Foundation to create the George Reed Legacy Fund. This fund ensures ongoing support for Reed’s objectives: expanding sports opportunities for individuals through initiatives with Special Olympics Saskatchewan and Mother Teresa Middle School.
